Pharmacogenomic (PGx)

What Is It?

Pharmacogenomic testing analyzes a patient’s genetic makeup to understand how their body may respond to specific medications. By examining variations in certain genes, PGx testing helps predict whether a drug will be effective, what dosage may be appropriate, and whether a patient is at increased risk for side effects. PGx is commonly used in areas such as pain management, psychiatry, cardiology, oncology, and primary care, where medications often require fine-tuned dosing and patient-specific consideration.

Why It Matters

This test empowers providers to make more informed prescribing decisions, improving treatment outcomes, reducing adverse drug reactions, and supporting personalized medicine.

how it works

How PGx Testing Works

  1. Genetic Analysis: PGx testing examines specific genes related to drug metabolism, transport, and target interaction. These genetic factors influence how an individual’s body processes and responds to various medications.

  2. Sample Collection: A small sample—such as a cheek swab—is collected from the patient for genetic evaluation.

  3. Laboratory Processing: The collected sample is analyzed in the laboratory to detect variations in key genes associated with drug response.

  4. Result Interpretation: Identified genetic variations are reviewed to understand their potential impact on the patient’s medication effectiveness and safety.

  5. Personalized Recommendations: Using these insights, healthcare providers can tailor medication choices, adjust dosages, or take precautions to minimize side effects and optimize treatment outcomes.
